Lancaster, Pa. – As part of its newly expanded corporate-wide sustainability initiative, the High® companies are gearing up for a prominent celebration of Earth Day on April 22. A host of awareness-building activities leading up to the day are planned for employees. The Earth Day activities, led by a subgroup of the company’s sustainability committee, include:
- An internal communications campaign to remind employees of Earth Day and build awareness and anticipation, including an on-line contest reinforcing its history, conservation of resources and energy, and reduction of carbon footprint
- Earth Day gift bags for all employees, packaged in a reusable grocery bag and including contact information for specific types of recycling, information about best practices for disposing of various items, and battery recycling bags from Lancaster Solid Waste Authority
- A convenient drop-off waste recycling center at the corporate offices on Earth Day for employees to dispose of old paint, televisions, computers, monitors, fluorescent lamps, batteries, and used laser and ink jet printer cartridges
- A pre- and post-Earth Day scorecard used to measure and record the cumulative improvement of behavior-based sustainability efforts of High team members, including number of cars in the parking lot (versus other forms of transportation), reams of paper used, kilowatt hours used, trees planted, and elevator trips (versus more use of stairs)
- A walk-to-the-pavilion Earth Day luncheon with sustainability-focused program including organic and locally-grown food served with biodegradable plates and cups
- The adoption of a local highway through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Adopt-a-Highway program, to be announced at the Earth Day luncheon
“In recent years, as the focus on sustainability has heightened and best practices factor into business decision making, we’ve formalized our long-established environmental stewardship goals in ways that dramatically cut costs,” said Rick Dickerson, PE, manager of strategic projects for the High companies.
“And in addition to cutting costs, our reduction of energy usage reduces direct emissions and contributes to improving not only our organization’s sustainability, but the sustainability of our community as well,” Dickerson added.
